Logistics for Tangier
This is how we traveled to Tangier from Spain. We drove to Tarifa and parked at a paid parking lot. The parking lot at the ferry terminal fills up quickly so don’t bet on getting a spot there. We parked nearby at Parking Municipal Tarifa and walked 8-10 minutes to the ferry terminal. We bought our ferry tickets online before arriving at the ferry so we just had to go through the check-in line. Then, we put our backpacks through security and went through passport control where they checked our passports and Portuguese residence cards.
Once we were on the ferry, we had to wait in line to go through passport control for Morocco while the boat was in transit to Tangier. The ferry moves quickly through the Strait of Gibraltar.
HOT TIP: Get in the passport control line as soon as you enter the ferry! After the 1-hour ferry ride to Tangier, we exited and the guards quickly checked our passports to make sure they had the correct stamps. Then, we walked through the ferry terminal and into the city. Beware that there are many taxi drivers at the exit and will repeatedly ask you if you want a taxi ride. We quickly walked past them and were amazed by our first views of Tangier of the Kasbah and Fort area. Tangier is one of the best places to start your travels if this is your first visit to a Moroccan city.

HOT TIP: Many busy streets don’t have crosswalks. To cross the street, you have to check diligently and then quickly cross the street before vehicles come. I felt like I was playing Crossy Road – just be very careful! The drivers are a bit erratic and it seems like drivers have more rights than pedestrians.
