If you’ve ever craved fresh, soft tortillas but only had store-bought options on hand, it’s time to try your hand at making your own with this easy vegan flour tortilla recipe. With just a few basic ingredients—flour, salt, vegetable oil, and water —you can whip up the best homemade flour tortillas, perfect for soft tacos or wraps. The dough comes together easily in a large bowl, and after a brief rest at room temperature, you’ll be ready to roll it out into thin, pliable tortillas. Whether you’re making smaller tortillas for street tacos or larger wraps for burritos, this recipe gives you the best results without any animal products. You’ll be amazed at how much better these fresh tortillas taste compared to store-bought options, and the recipe card will guide you through the process, step by step.
Tortilla Alternatives
Making your own tortillas also means you can experiment with gluten-free tortillas or even add extra flavors like spinach or whole wheat for variety. After rolling the dough into circles, cook the tortillas on a hot skillet or large pan over medium heat until golden brown. If you’re making a double batch, store your homemade tortillas in a plastic bag or airtight container with a damp towel to keep them soft. For the ultimate soft flour tortillas, you can even use vegan butter or coconut oil for a richer texture. This is the best way to enjoy the true flavors of traditional Mexican cuisine, and once you’ve tried your first tortilla, you’ll never want to go back to store-bought again!

Method
- Make the dough: Add all-purpose flour, salt and baking powder to a large mixing bowl. Whisk together.
- Mix the oil and water together in a mixing cup. Then, make a well in the center of the dry flour mixture and pour the water/oil mixture.
- Use a wooden spoon to mix the dough together. Once mixed, use your hands to gently knead the dough until it's smooth and elastic. Add extra flour if the dough is sticky.
- Use your hands to roll approximately 16 golf ball sized balls of dough. Put on a floured surface or on a silicone mat and let rest for 15 minutes.
- After resting, use your palm to push down a ball. Roll each dough ball into a 6 inch circle or until it is very thin.
- Cook the tortillas: Place a cast iron or non-stick skillet on medium-high heat. Once hot, place one uncooked tortilla onto the skillet. Cook for 30-60 seconds on each side, until golden brown and you see some brown spots.
- Serve warm and enjoy the deliciousness!

What To Do with These Vegan Tortillas
The best uses for these flour tortillas: Mexican food such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas; indian food – use these in place of roti or naan; Ethiopian food – use these in place of injera; salad wraps and other veggie wraps. They are extremely versatile!
For a super simple meal that my teens prepare by themselves – make vegan quesadillas by warming up a couple of tortillas and put vegan cheese, such as Violife, Follow Your Heart or Miyoko’s, inside the tortilla, double the tortilla over so the cheese can melt inside and voilá, you have vegan quesadillas. My teens like to slice up some avocado to put inside the quesadilla.

These flour tortillas are delicious! I’ve tried making flour tortillas before and they just didn’t turn out that well. These are perfect! Soft, pliable yet sturdy, and full of flavor. I cut the dough into 16 pieces, resulting in lovely 6” tortillas. If I need burrito-size, I’ll divide the dough into 12 pieces. Thank you for a great recipe!
