We flew directly from Lisbon to Copenhagen via SAS Airlines. We had a great experience with them. Once we arrived in Copenhagen, we bought a ticket to ride public transportation to our final destination (90 kroner for the 4 of us). The public transportation ticketing system is very confusing. Either use the DOT app, which makes it much easier or ask someone for help when you are at a station. Or get this card. You don’t want to get caught without a transportation ticket. The authorities will absolutely 100% give you a ticket for 750 kroner (around $110 USD at the time of this post). Don’t ask me how I know this! Oof .. save yourself the trouble. Download the DOT app and buy your tickets that way or BUY THIS transportation card!

Vesterbro and Nørrebro are two neighborhoods that have gained popularity in recent years. Vesterbro, once known as a red-light district, has transformed into a hip area full of cafes, restaurants, and vintage shops. This is the neighborhood where we stayed during our recent visit.

Be sure to stop by some of the local hotspots, such as the Torvehallerne market in Nørrebro, where you can sample some of Denmark’s delicious street food.

After exploring the various neighborhoods of Copenhagen and indulging in some delicious street food, it’s time to relax at one of the city’s rooftop bars. The views from these bars are truly breathtaking and give you a unique perspective of the cityscape. You can’t go wrong with any of the following options: The Standard, Hotel Danmark, or Ruby. Sip on a refreshing drink and soak in the stunning scenery.

As mentioned above, Rosenborg Castle is undoubtedly one of the most awe-inspiring sights in Copenhagen. The castle dates back to the 17th century and is the epitome of Renaissance architecture. The castle’s interiors are every bit as stunning as its exteriors. The castle is also home to the Danish Crown Jewels, which are worth taking a look at.
After exploring Rosenborg Castle, head over to Stroget for some retail therapy. This pedestrian-only shopping street boasts some of the best shopping in Copenhagen. You can find everything from designer clothing to one-of-a-kind souvenirs. The street is also home to some of the city’s top restaurants and cafes, making it the perfect spot for a mid-day snack or lunch.
Peruse Stroget
When it comes to shopping, Copenhagen offers a plethora of options, but none quite compare to Stroget. This pedestrian-only shopping street is not only one of the longest in Europe, but it’s also one of the oldest, dating back to the late 1800s. The street is lined with an eclectic mix of shops, ranging from high-end designers to affordable fashion chains, making it an ideal spot for a shopping spree. But it’s not just fashion on offer – Stroget is also home to antique shops, bookstores, and gourmet food stores. We found a nice art supply store in this area.
Apart from its shopping scene, Stroget is a must-visit site for its historic architecture. The buildings along the street are a beautiful mix of medieval and Renaissance styles, many of which have been around since the 17th century. As you wander along the street, be sure to look up and appreciate the incredible facades of these historic buildings.
While Stroget is bustling during the day, it takes on an entirely different vibe at night when the shops close, and the street comes alive with street performers and musicians. It’s the perfect time to grab a drink and soak in the lively atmosphere.
After indulging in some retail therapy, make your way to Christiansborg Palace, located just a short walk from Stroget.

The palace serves as the headquarters of the Danish Parliament and also houses the Supreme Court and the Ministry of State. As you wander through the palace’s grand halls and ornately decorated rooms, you’ll be transported back in time to Denmark’s royal past. Don’t miss the opulent throne room, which is sure to take your breath away with its intricate details and regal furnishings.

The botanical garden, located just a short distance from the palace, is the perfect place to do just that. With its lush greenery and vibrant blooms, the garden provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Stroll through the winding paths and take in the exquisite sights and fragrant smells of the numerous plant species on display. Marvel at the towering trees, intricate water features, and breathtaking sculptures scattered throughout the grounds. Keep an eye out for the garden’s resident wildlife, from the fluttering butterflies to the busy bees.
Enjoy the view from the Church of our Saviour
Take a moment to catch your breath and bask in the beauty of Copenhagen from the top of the Church of our Saviour. With its iconic spiral staircase and stunning views of the city skyline, it’s no wonder this church is a popular destination for both tourists and locals alike.
Climb the 400 steps to the top and be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Copenhagen’s colorful buildings and sparkling harbor. On a clear day, you can even see all the way to Sweden! And if you’re feeling brave, step outside onto the outdoor viewing platform for an even more exhilarating experience.
But the view isn’t the only draw of the Church of our Saviour. The church itself is a marvel of architecture and history, with a stunning Baroque spire that dominates the city’s skyline. Take some time to explore the ornate interior, which features intricate wood carvings, stunning frescoes, and a beautiful organ.
Visit Freetown Christiania
Freetown Christiania is an intentional community, commune and micronation in the Christianshavn neighborhood. It began in 1971 as a squatted military base and is a self-proclaimed anarchist community. Pusher Street is famous for its open trade of cannabis, which is illegal in Denmark so when you explore this area, abide by the no photo on Pusher Street rules. This vibrant area is very colorful with street art, a popup market with handcrafted items, art studios, a vegetarian restaurant and canals nearby. There’s an adorable woodsy play area for kids too where the sign clearly states that adults aren’t allowed, only kids. It was interesting to walk through this area and really understand the culture of the community. We highly recommend a visit!
BONUS: Explore Frederiksberg Park
As we stayed in Vesterbro and we had bicycles for our stay, we greatly enjoyed riding bikes to a couple of parks in the area, such as Frederiksberg Park and Haveselskabets Park. They weren’t crowded and most of the people in the parks seemed to be locals. They are absolutely gorgeous parks and very well taken care of. Between the pond, palace, statues, unique flora and fauna, we highly recommend a visit here.

- Bistro Verde – very close to the main touristy areas in Nyhavn
- Eden Jaxx – delicious veggie burgers and other vegan junk food
- NiceCream for all vegan ice cream and KAF for delectable desserts
HOT TIP: It’s really expensive to eat out in Copenhagen. We were honestly shocked by how expensive it was as we are used to the very affordable Portugal standard. A veggie burger easily costs 25€ and up. Be prepared to spend a lot of money if you are eating out every day.
WHERE TO STAY IN COPENHAGEN
- A&O Hostel – this is where we stayed the first night we arrived. We got the family room and it was actually quite comfortable and affordable for Copenhagen.
- Hotel Tiffany – awesome location in Vesterbro, near where we had our lovely home exchange
- Grand Joanne – also a wonderful hotel in Vesterbro – we love this area!
- Copenhagen Admiral Hotel – fantastic location right in the center of town
- Andersen Boutique Hotel – a luxurious, perfectly located hotel in Vesterbro

- Copenhagen Hop On/Off Bus Tour with Boat option – this is the best way to get to know the layout of the city. I highly recommend that you do this the first day you arrive in Copenhagen.

- Copenhagen Transport Card plus discounts on tourist hotspots – don’t worry about having to deal with public transportation tickets by getting this card.
