Logistics for Traveling Around Spain
Public transportation in Europe is generally excellent. When we recently went to Girona from Barcelona, we bought out tickets through Trainline and it was more affordable than buying directly from Renfe. The high-speed train is 38 minutes from Barcelona Sants Station. Girona city center is a short walk from the Girona Train Station. We highly recommend Trainline to get your train tickets. If you have extra free time, I would recommend a walk to this charming park. I’m a sucker for tree alleys and this park is full of tree alleys! The trees are majestic and truly incredible! I wonder what they look like during the other seasons?!

- Start your day by exploring the Girona Cathedral, an iconic landmark with a mix of architectural styles. Climb the stairs for panoramic views of the city. See if you recognize the Game of Thrones scene.
Stroll through the Jewish Quarter (Barri Vell):
- Explore the narrow medieval streets of the Jewish Quarter. Highlights include the Jewish History Museum and the Call, one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe.
- Go to the Museum of Jewish History
Midday:
Lunch in Plaça de la Independència:
- Head to the main square, Plaça de la Independència, to enjoy lunch at one of the outdoor cafes. This is a great spot to relax and people-watch. We found that most restaurants offer a few vegan options.
Afternoon:
Walk along the City Walls (Passeig de la Muralla):
- Take a stroll along the ancient city walls for breathtaking views of Girona and the surrounding landscape.
Visit the Arab Baths (Banys Àrabs):
- Explore the well-preserved Arab Baths, dating back to the 12th century. These baths provide insight into the city’s history and architecture.
Cross the Eiffel Bridge (Pont de les Peixateries Velles):
- Walk across the Eiffel Bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel’s student, to enjoy views of the colorful houses along the Onyar River.
Find the culo de leon (lion’s butt):
- My friend, Scott who lives in Barcelona told us that we must find the lion’s butt. We found it alright! LOL – see photo below. Does it look like a lion? I guess that’s what people thought a lion looked like in medieval times. The sign says not to kiss the lion’s butt.
Evening:
Explore the Rambla de la Llibertat:
- Take a leisurely walk along the Rambla de la Llibertat, a lively boulevard with shops, cafes, and street performers.
