logistics
We went to Seville, Spain for my birthday weekend. First, we rented a car in Lisbon from Discover Cars (hybrid automatic car was $50 for Friday-Monday). Then, we picked up the car at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 11 and drove back to our apartment in Lisbon to get our items loaded into the vehicle for the road trip to Seville.
The drive from Lisbon to Seville takes 4 hours and 15 minutes if you drive straight through without stopping. We stopped a couple of times so it took us 4.5 hours. After driving through the Alentejo region of Portugal with gorgeous green rolling hills and views of castles on the hilltops, we crossed into a much drier Spain. Once we were about to cross to the Spain border, we had to pay a toll fee of approximately $20.
where we stayed – calle castilla in triana
We also forgot that Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal so we lost an hour there. We had hoped to arrive at our rental apartment at 7:30 p.m. Due to the time difference, we arrived at 8:30 p.m. Our short-term rental was a beautiful 2 bedroom/2 bathroom renovated apartment on Calle Castilla in Triana. It was right by the river and the Mercado de Triana. I highly recommend that you stay in Triana or the Old Town while visiting Seville. It’s a charming area and all of the tourist hotspots are still really close to walk to. You will get a more local feel by staying in the Triana area rather than downtown Seville.
We’ve been to Seville several more times since this first visit. The last two visits, we stayed right in the historic center and loved it. Parking the car was a little tricky in the underground parking lot, but by staying in this area, it made is so easy to walk around the city.
best ways to park in seville
HOT TIP: Before arriving in Seville, figure out your parking situation if you are arriving via vehicle! It is NOT easy to park there. We had to circle the neighborhood for more than 30 minutes to find street parking. If you don’t mind paying for parking, you may want to park in a parking garage. This will save you the hassle of finding street parking.
Now that the logistics are done, let’s talk about all the amazing things to do in Seville and where to eat the best vegan food!
THE BEST 15 THINGS TO DO IN SEVILLE, SPAIN
- Metropol Parasol (Las Setas) (9:30 a.m.-midnight): we loved this tourist attraction! It is seriously amazing and quite an architectural masterpiece. Once you arrive at the location, there is a kiosk to your left where you can buy tickets to go to the lookout at the top. We paid 5€ per person for an unguided trip to the top. The guided experiences cost more, but this guided tour would be worth the extra cost. Buy tickets ahead of time online or at the kiosk as this will save you a lot of time. Once you take the elevator to the top, you walk the winding route until you come to the highest point and the lookout. The panoramic views of Seville are impressive and thankfully, they have several placards pointing out the sights of interest. HOT TIP: Buy tickets online ahead of time or at the kiosk! If you aren’t able to travel to Seville, you can do this cool virtual tour of Las Setas.

parks
- Parque de María Luisa (8 a.m.-10 p.m.): we love parks and being outside as much as possible while traveling. And, of course, we love free things to do. This park was huge and very interesting between the tree-lined streets, orange groves (patio de los naranjos), duck pond, waterfall and well-manicured shrubbery and of course, seeing Plaza de España. You could easily spend a few hours here and even more so if you go with small children. HOT TIP: If you go with kids, you can pretty much let them run around and roam free inside the shrubbery and green spaces. It’s well-protected from the nearby streets.
- Plaza de España (8 a.m.-10 p.m.): WOW! This Plaza is remarkable and massive! All of the details with the ceramic tiles and intricate carvings in the stone are mind-boggling. As you walk over the bridge walkway and closer to the interior, you are likely to come across a live flamenco presentation. HOT TIP: Don’t miss the live Flamenco show!

- Real Alcázar (9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.): This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the top visited site in Seville and for good reason. All I can say is visit this masterpiece of a building and garden. It’s a must-do while in Seville! The Moorish influence, the intricate carvings in stone, the tilework and dizzying array of tiles on the floors, the ceilings, the lush, highly manicured and sculpted gardens make this a feast for the eyes. Not to mention the lovely scent of orange trees in the courtyard! You could easily spend 3-4 hours here! HOT TIP: Buy your tickets online to avoid the lines and go when it opens, if possible, to enjoy the site with less people. Or buy this awesome priority entry tour: REAL ALCAZAR.

- Museo de Las Ilusiones (10 a.m.-10 p.m.): Even if you aren’t traveling with kids, this is an awesome way to spend 45 minutes of your time! It’s so fun to be playful like a kid again and learn all the ways that your brain plays tricks on your eyes. This is a very entertaining and enjoyable/interactive museum! HOT TIP: Buy your timed-entry tickets online.

jewish quarter – perfect for exploring – the best 15 things to do in seville spain
- Barrio de Santa Cruz (Calle Agua): This is the old Jewish quarter which also happens to be right in the middle of all the tourist attractions. The area is a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways with beautiful buildings along the way. If you are in Seville during the hot summer months, this is the perfect place to cool down in the shade. HOT TIP: Allow yourself some time to get lost in this area and just enjoy whatever you come across.

- Palacio de las Dueñas (10 a.m.-6:00 p.m.): This gorgeous palace currently belongs to the House of Alba. It was built in the 15th century in the Renaissance style with Gothic and Moorish influences by the Pineda family. Not as grand as Real Alcázar, but it’s an enjoyable way to spend some time reveling in the opulence and richness of resources. You’ll find beautiful gardens here too.
- Triana bridge (technically called Puente de Isabel II): If you stay in the Triana neighborhood, you will cross this bridge anytime you want to see the top tourist attractions. This bridge is especially breathtaking at night where you can take amazing photos as the bridge appears to be made of gold due to the materials and lighting. HOT TIP: Take photos right after the sun sets. The light navy sky along with the golden-looking bridge is truly glorious.

you can’t go to seville without seeing a flamenco show
- Flamenco show: Flamenco Museum or any of the many Tablao’s around town – you are in the birthplace of Flamenco so you MUST see a show. They typically start at 7:30 or 8:30 p.m. and last for an hour. HOT TIP: Get your tickets online for a flamenco performance and then eat dinner nearby afterward as Spaniards eat much later, between 9-midnight.

mercados – the best 15 things to do in seville spain
- Mercado de Triana (9:00am-5:00 p.m., Sunday 12-5) and Centro Cerámica Triana (10-7:30) – the Mercado has a few fruit/veggie vendors with amazingly HUGE produce. These are some of the largest potatoes I’ve ever seen! And close by is the Centro Cerámica Triana. It’s really interesting to see how they produce all of the locally-made ceramics. HOT TIP: These spots are 2-minute walking distance from each other. You can easily enjoy both spots in less than an hour.
- Catedral de Sevilla (10:45-5) and La Giralda – the Catedral is enormous and the largest cathedral in Spain! I honestly have no idea how they built such a colossal building before modern tools. It’s the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. The colorful stained-glass designs are incredible and impressive. Nearby, the Icon of Seville, the magnificent Giralda was the tallest building in the city for over 800 years, dominating the skyline at 103m. Originally built in 1195 as the minaret of the Aljama mosque, it is now the bell tower of the cathedral, and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. HOT TIP: You can be cheap like us and just take photos of the outside (for free) or you can pay 9€ to go inside La Giralda and see the 24 bells and El Salvador. OR you can do this amazing tour that includes several hot spots.

riverfront walks – the best 15 things to do in seville spain
- Walk along the riverfront (Guadalquivir river) and stop to see the Torre del Oro – this was one of our favorite nightly activities. The ambiance and festive-like atmosphere were catching. There are adorable drink kiosks on both sides of the river and plenty of people partaking in the festivities. It’s an entertaining place to watch people! HOT TIP: Walk on the Triana side from the Mercado to Puente de San Telmo, cross the bridge and then walk from that bridge back to the Triana bridge, stopping to see the Torre del Oro and just enjoying the panoramic views from that side. OR do this cool river cruise!
- See Edificio La Adriática – this building can be found at Avenida de la Constitución 2, near Plaza Nueva and Plaza de San Francisco. It’s also relatively close to the main tourist area. This building is a must-see for its architectural genius! HOT TIP: Take a photo of the “Minecraft” tree across the tram tracks. My kids loved this square-shaped voluptuous tree.

more palaces – the best things to do in seville spain
- Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija (10 a.m.- 6 p.m.) – this is a house museum with an extensive collection of Asian and European art. The architecture of the building seems to have a plethora of different styles and influences which are interesting to see in person. HOT TIP: Combine this visit with a visit to the Metropol Parasols (Las Setas) as it’s a short 3-minute walk away.
- Casa de Pilatos (9 a.m. – 6 p.m.) – This impressive palace serves as the permanent residence of the Spanish Royal Family, the Dukes of Medinaceli. You could get these ground floor tickets. As you walk around, marvel at the largest collection of 1530s azulejos (tiles) in the world! HOT TIP: Several Hollywood films have been filmed here. Can you guess which ones?
visiting seville during the feria season (holy week)
The Feria de Abril (April Fair) is a vibrant and lively festival, that takes place two weeks after Easter It is a celebration of Andalusian culture, with its roots dating back to the 19th century.
The streets of Seville are adorned with colorful paper lanterns and traditional Spanish flags, giving the city a festive feel. As you make your way through the city, you can hear the sound of flamenco music and the clinking of glasses as locals and tourists alike indulge in the local sherry wine, Rebujito. The atmosphere is infectious, and you can’t help but get caught up in the joy and energy of the Feria.
But the Feria is not just about the parties and festivities. It’s a time to honor the traditions and customs of Andalusia. Each day, the fair begins with a traditional parade of horse-drawn carriages, known as “cabezudos,” where excited children line the streets to catch a glimpse of their favorite characters. The women, dressed in stunning flamenco dresses, also add to the spectacle as they elegantly ride side-saddle on the carriages.
Flamenco dancing at the seville feria
As the day progresses, the fairgrounds come to life with various activities such as flamenco dancing, and traditional dancing. The streets are lined with casetas, beautifully decorated tents where people gather to eat, drink, and dance the night away.
But what makes the Feria truly unique is the sense of community and inclusivity it brings. It’s a time when locals open their homes and hearts to visitors, inviting them to join in the celebrations. You’ll often find families and friends gathered in the casetas, welcoming strangers with open arms and sharing their love for their culture and traditions.
The Feria de Abril is more than just a festival; it’s a cultural experience that will leave a lasting impression on anyone who attends. It’s a time to embrace the vibrant and passionate spirit of the Andalusian people and immerse yourself in their rich history and traditions.
As you plan your trip to Seville, make sure to coincide it with the Feria season. It’s an experience not to be missed and will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. So pack your flamenco dress and dancing shoes and get ready to join the fiesta in Seville, Spain’s most enchanting city during the Feria de Abril. ¡Viva la fiesta!
BONUS: If you have more time in Seville and would like to do a day trip, this TOUR would be amazing!
Where to eat (Truly amazing vegan food)
As this was a 3-day trip, we weren’t able to hit all of these awesome vegan hot spots. However, the restaurants we went to were fantastic and highly recommended! Most of the restaurants we ate at were very affordable, and for our family of 4 (eating really well!), we spent 35-40€. In Lisbon, we typically spend more than that. Next time we go to Seville, we plan on doing one of these awesome Seville Vegan Food Tours.
vegan eats
Veganitessen (Tue-Sat 11:00-16:00) – this adorable cafe is inside the Arenal Market. We all tried several of their Spanish tortillas and they were all absolutely divine. Since we were spending all day out, we also chose an exciting array of sweet treats. OMG! They were mind-blowingly good!
El Enano Verde (W-Su 1-4:30 p.m.) – this was one of the few places open on Sunday so we made sure to get there right at opening time on Sunday. They cook with the season and have different offerings on a weekly basis. We got the lunch specials which included a soup or salad and main dish. The garlic soup (an Andalusian specialty) was fantastic and my favorite, but everything else we ordered was truly awesome.
so many awesome vegan restaurants – the best 15 things to do in seville spain
Vegan Rock (Thu-Sat 13:00-00:00, Sun 13:00-17:00) – Spanish tapas, all veganized! This place was spectacular and we ate extremely well here. We shared about 8 tapas between us and then shared 2 desserts for approximately 45 Euros. Such a great deal for such amazing food. We talked a bit with the owner, David and it was obvious that he takes great pride in creating the most delectable vegan food around!
Vegani (T-Sa 1-4, 8-11 p.m.) – As soon as we arrived on Friday to Seville, we ate here but most of the options were sold out since we arrived late. We ordered 3 different burgers and fries and everything was delicious. This is a small take-out type of place as they only have a few bar stools to eat at. When we went, it was a 1-woman operation so you need a little patience during the wait, but it’s well worth the wait. We loved everything we got!
more vegan places to eat on our next trip to seville
La Vegana (Mon-Fri 10:00-14:00)(not highly rated, but good for cakes) – due to their hours, we weren’t able to eat here. On Happy Cow, it comes highly rated for desserts, but not so much for their savory offerings. Let me know what you think if you eat here! GLUTEN-FREE Menu
La Mar de Dulces (Tue-Sat 08:00-15:00) – this restaurant is outside the main tourist area so it’s not as easy to get to. It comes highly recommended on Happy Cow though so if you are in the area, you could try it.
Obrador La Osa (inside Mercado de Triana) – we were hoping to check out this spot inside the market as it was a short 2 minute walk from our rental, but alas, we weren’t able to make it. On Happy Cow, the reviews talk about how awesome the vegan Spanish tortillas are. We will definitely eat here next time we are in Seville.
authentic vegan tacos
Taqueria La Lupe (1:30-4; 8:45-11:45) – a local Vegan from the Vegan Travel Facebook group highly recommended this restaurant, especially since they are open on Sundays. They create authentic Mexican food and while this is an Omni restaurant, their vegan offerings were extensive. This was the most expensive place we ate at, but the tacos and chilaquiles we ordered were quite amazing.
