What to do in Braga – best things to do in braga Portugal
A Brief History of Braga
Braga, one of Portugal’s oldest cities, boasts a rich history that stretches back over 2,000 years. Founded by the Romans in 16 BCE as Bracara Augusta, it was a prominent administrative hub in the Iberian Peninsula. The city’s strategic location at the crossroads of important Roman roads facilitated its development into a cultural and commercial center. During the Middle Ages, Braga became a bastion of Christianity, earning its nickname as the “Portuguese Rome.” As the seat of the Archbishopric, it played a pivotal role in shaping Portugal’s religious identity, with its numerous churches and monasteries symbolizing the city’s enduring spiritual influence.
Over the centuries, Braga evolved into a dynamic blend of ancient and modern. Its Baroque architecture, particularly the iconic Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, and its historic cathedral, the Sé de Braga, reflect its artistic and cultural legacy. Simultaneously, Braga has embraced innovation, emerging as a vibrant city with a youthful energy thanks to its universities and thriving tech scene. This fascinating mix of old and new makes Braga an unmissable destination for history enthusiasts and modern explorers.

Bom Jesus do Monte Staircase: MUST SEE! This is a bit out of the city center so you’ll need to take a taxi or Bolt to reach it if you are traveling without a car. Do not miss this – it’s absolutely worth the trip. It’s a city icon with its majestic staircase and panoramic views once you reach the top of the staircase. If you don’t feel fit enough to walk the 640 steps up the staircase, you can always take the funicular that is right next to the staircase.
Bom Jesus do Monte Funicular: This cool funicular will save your legs from having to climb the 640 steps up the staircase to the top of Bom Jesus do Monte. The cars run at the same time in opposite directions. The car coming down the hill uses water to weigh it down, which also powers the lighter car coming up. It’s really a master feat in engineering!

City center + Raio Palace: The Raio Palace, situated in the heart of Braga, Portugal, stands as a striking testament to the city’s architectural heritage. This 18th-century masterpiece, often regarded as one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the country, enchants visitors with its ornate facade adorned with intricate sculptures and decorative motifs. Originally commissioned by João Duarte de Faria, a wealthy merchant, the palace’s design by architect André Soares showcases a harmonious blend of Portuguese Baroque and Rococo styles. The interior, equally grandiose, boasts opulent halls, richly decorated ceilings, and elegant staircases, offering a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of its former inhabitants. Today, the Raio Palace stands as a cultural landmark, hosting exhibitions and events that celebrate both its historical significance and artistic splendor, inviting visitors to marvel at its beauty and immerse themselves in Braga’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
Once you’re done marveling at the sublime azulejos-adorned Raio Palace, I highly recommend a leisure stroll around the city center, checking out the architecture, churches, flora, and fauna. Don’t forget to get a photo with the BRAGA sign! Braga is well-known for its beautiful gardens in the city centre.

If you arrive to Braga by train, it’s a short 5-minute walk from the exquisite azulejos-adorned Braga train station.
Braga Cathedral (Sé de Braga): the oldest cathedral in Portugal and existed before Portugal became a country. It was built in the 12th century. This is one of the most important buildings in Portugal due to its long history and artistic significance.
