Comporta is a leisurely 1 hour 20-minute hour drive from Lisbon and is easiest to reach by personal vehicle.
We recently went to Comporta as we had a rental car. We were awestruck by the gorgeous aquamarine waters and velvety white sand beaches with protected sand dunes in the background. Comporta is a small village that is quiet in the off-season, but quite popular during school holidays. It’s a top destination for affluent Portuguese people as they seek quiet, rest, and convening with nature. It’s a must to have a vehicle to reach and explore this area. These are the top activities to do while in Comporta.
Comporta beaches: Praia do Pego, Praia do Carvalhal, Praia da Comporta – these beaches are TOP NOTCH! The aquamarine color of the ocean makes you feel like you are in the Caribbean or some other distant, tropical region. However, keep in mind that this is the Atlantic Ocean and the water is chilly. It makes for a very refreshing dip when the Alentejo summer heat picks up.
Spending time in nature in comporta
Go for a walk in the pine forest – Comporta boasts many eco-lodges and upscale hotels that are surrounded by pine forests and natural vegetation. We highly recommend that you stay at least 1-2 nights here and explore the area by foot.
Do SUP or take a surfing class – if you are visiting during the summer season, these are popular yet incredibly fun activities. If you’re not much into extreme sports, then a leisure walk on the beach is always fun. Comporta’s beaches are FULL of huge and colorful shells which makes beachcombing a perfect tranquil activity.

Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira – This is a restored wooden pier on stilts, mostly used by fishermen and those wanting to take lovely sunset photos in this unique spot.
Tróia Peninsula – This area is reachable by ferry from Setúbal and is surrounded by pristine beaches and the protected Sado Estuary. Part of the peninsula has an upscale hotel, casino, and restaurants, while the gem of the peninsula is the natural areas with a plethora of birds and other sea-dwelling animals. This is a perfect day trip from Setúbal.
Must-visit nature reserve
Sado Estuary – This estuary is located close to Comporta, especially if you are traveling by vehicle. Here you can find countless species of birds and several dozen dolphins amid marshes, sandbanks, rice paddies, and a vast area of woods and reed plantations. This conservation area is also home to several threatened species, such as the black bat and otter. We highly recommend a day visit here or a boat tour. This is a popular activity given that over 250 species of birds call this area home, but you will be rewarded with fantastic bird activity and sublime views.
Other fun things to do in Comporta if time allows: Herdade da Comporta, Comporta Village, Campo de Arroz, and other lovely spots in the Alentejo region, such as Evora.

Where to eat vegan food in Comporta
- Breakfast by 5 Sentidos – This place is open for very short hours and only during the high season, but it’s the only vegetarian restaurant in the area. Comes highly recommended!
- Be Comporta – This is an Omni restaurant but has many vegan options. Good choice while in Comporta.
- Sublime Comporta – This is an ultra-luxurious restaurant and bar. The drinks look extra fancy and they have a vegetarian menu that can be slightly modified to make the dish vegan.
