7 Days in Portugal in: Lisbon, Ericeira, Porto, Peneda-Geres Park, Douro Valley and Serra da Estrela
This is a very quick pace with many changes. If this is your first time in Portugal, you may want to hire a guided tour company to take you to all of the hotspots. One of the best things about using a travel guide is that it saves you time in planning the trip and getting to all of the places. This is a great option for first-time visitors to this incredible country.
If you prefer to take it easier and go at a slower pace, I recommend that you stay 4 days in Lisbon and 3 days in Porto and take side trips from each of these places. From Lisbon, you could take day trips to Sintra, Cascais, Sesimbra, Arrabida and Obidos. From Porto, you could take day trips to Braga (see Bom Jesus), Aveiro, Costa Nova, Coimbra and Peneda-Geres.

My personal recommendation would be to extend your trip to more than 7 days. You could stay in each place for at least 1-2 days. I prefer slow travel these days. If you have the extra time and money, I would recommend a 12-day trip and spend a couple of days in the places that are more interesting to you.

when to visit Portugal (7-day Portugal itinerary)
Best Time to Visit Portugal
The best time to visit Portugal largely depends on the type of experience you’re looking for, as the country offers something special year-round. Generally, the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are considered the best times to visit, thanks to pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable prices compared to the busy summer months. During these seasons, you can enjoy Portugal’s beautiful beaches, explore its historical sites, and immerse yourself in the charm of small villages and historic towns with plenty of time for activities. The landscapes are especially vibrant in spring, and the grape harvest in fall makes it an ideal time for wine tastings in the stunning Douro Valley.
For beach lovers, the summer months (June to August) are perfect for relaxing along the Algarve’s golden sand or paddleboarding near Benagil Cave. However, these are also the busiest months, with higher prices and larger crowds at main attractions like Pena Palace and Lisbon’s Jerónimos Monastery. If you prefer fewer tourists, the winter months (December to February) offer a quieter, more laid-back experience, especially in southern Portugal, where temperatures remain mild. It’s also a good idea to visit the second-largest city, Porto, and enjoy its cozy vibe, boat tours, and local cuisine during the cooler months.
Book your trip now and unlock the secrets of Portugal. Let the wind whip through your hair as you surf the waves in Ericeira. Feel the rush of adrenaline as you navigate the trails and waterfalls of Peneda-Gerês. Stand in awe of the breathtaking vistas as you hike through the Serra da Estrela. And marvel at the vibrant history and charm of Porto.
As you reflect on your adventure, you’ll realize that Portugal has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you hungry for more. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the world around you and a curiosity to explore even further.
