From Lisbon:
- By Train: The easiest way to get to both Coimbra and Aveiro from Lisbon is by train. The Coimbra-B station and Aveiro station are well-connected to Lisbon’s Oriente station or Santa Apolónia station. The train ride to Coimbra takes around 2 hours, while Aveiro is about 2.5 hours away. There are frequent daily trains, including both regional and high-speed options.
- By Bus: Buses are another option, with routes operated by companies like Rede Expressos. The journey typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to Coimbra and about 3 hours to Aveiro.
- By Car: If you prefer a road trip, renting a car is a great option. The drive from Lisbon to Coimbra takes about 2 hours via the A1 highway, while Aveiro is about 2.5 hours away. You can enjoy scenic views along the way, especially if you take the A17 road towards Aveiro.
From Porto:
- By Train: Both Coimbra and Aveiro are easily accessible by train from Porto. The train ride to Coimbra from Campanhã station takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and Aveiro is around 1 hour away. There are regular trains to both cities throughout the day.
- By Bus: Buses from Porto to Coimbra and Aveiro are also available, with a travel time of about 1.5 hours to Coimbra and 1 hour to Aveiro.
- By Car: If you’re driving from Porto, the trip to Coimbra takes about 1.5 hours, while Aveiro is just under an hour away, making it a great option for a road trip with scenic views.
Within the Cities:
Once in Coimbra or Aveiro, both cities are easy to explore on foot, as they have compact historic centers. For those who prefer guided tours, many local agencies offer private tours with hotel pickup or air-conditioned transportation to explore the area. You can also easily find taxis or local trains for further travel, especially if you want to explore small towns nearby, such as Costa Nova Beach in Aveiro.

Biblioteca Joanina:
This is a fascinating Baroque library, considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. It’s become so popular that you need a timed paid ticket to enter if you are a tourist, which includes the places mentioned above. Chapel of São Miguel:
From the 16th century with Manueline and late Portuguese Gothic architecture. A visit to this awe-inspiring chapel is included in the entry tickets to the University of Coimbra and Biblioteca Joanina.
Almedina Gate:
This gate is one of the entrance points to the old city and as you are wandering around the old city, you will definitely come across it.
Monastery of Santa Cruz (Igreja de Santa Cruz):
A lovely monastery is originally from the 12th century, but the architecture from 16th century in Manueline style. As the first two Portuguese Kings are buried here, this monastery is considered a National Pantheon
Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Sé Velha):
A Romanesque cathedral that was the first cathedral built in Coimbra in the 12th century when Coimbra was the capital of Portugal.
Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha:
A captivating Gothic monastery which was originally built in the 1300’s on the left bank of the Mondego river, but frequent floods caused it to be abandoned in the 17th century. After 300 years of being abandoned, in the 20th century, it was excavated and restored and is now open to the public.

Pedro e Ines footbridge:
This is one of my favorite things to do in Coimbra – walk over this beautiful, colorful footbridge with a great view of the University of Coimbra with an interesting architectural design.
Quinta das Lagrimas Garden:
Quinta das Lágrimas in Coimbra is a historic estate steeped in romance and legend. Known as the site of the tragic love story between Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro, the gardens are a serene and beautiful escape, with lush greenery, winding paths, and tranquil water features. The estate is home to a 19th-century palace and offers visitors a glimpse into Coimbra’s royal past. The name “Quinta das Lágrimas” (Estate of Tears) comes from the heart-wrenching tale of forbidden love, making it not only a stunning garden but also a poignant piece of Portuguese history.
Penedo da Saudade:
a gorgeous park that is a popular place for university students and is also the place where Pedro I came to mourn the loss of Ines
University of Coimbra Botanical Garden:
Brown squirrels!! – Need I say more?! This botanical garden was founded in 1772 for medical and natural history faculties and counts over 1200 species of plants and trees. You must see the bamboo forest here and don’t forget to take alluring photos with the forest and sunlight poking through that evokes a surreal experience.
Parque Verde do Mondego:
Beautiful green space next to the river for relaxing and people-watching. After you cross the Pedro e Ines footbridge, wander over here and relax by the riverfront.
Portugal dos Pequenitos:
Portugal dos Pequenitos in Coimbra is a unique theme park designed for children, offering a miniature version of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks and architectural heritage. The park features scaled-down replicas of famous buildings, such as the Belem Tower and the Palácio da Pena, allowing young visitors to explore the country’s history and culture in an engaging and interactive way. With colorful houses, gardens, and educational exhibits, Portugal dos Pequenitos is a fun and charming destination for families, providing a memorable experience while introducing children to the diverse regions and traditions of Portugal.
Conimbriga:
A short 20-25 minute drive from Coimbra to experience the largest, most intact Roman ruins in Portugal. It’s absolutely mind-boggling and compelling to see them first-hand and imagine how they looked when they were all intact.

What to Do in Aveiro (Amazing trip to Coimbra and Aveiro Portugal)
Mosteiro de Jesus:
The Mosteiro de Jesus is a stunning historical monastery dating back to the 15th century. Once home to a community of nuns, it is renowned for its beautiful Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The monastery houses a remarkable collection of religious art, including intricate altarpieces and sculptures, and is famous for its serene cloisters. Today, the Mosteiro de Jesus serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Aveiro’s rich religious and cultural heritage, making it a must-visit landmark for those exploring the city’s history.
Aveiro’s canals:
This is probably what makes Aveiro the most well-known as people like to call this town the “Venice” of Portugal. The area is surrounded by pastel-colored houses and moliceiros. Moliceiro is the name given to the boats that sail in the Ria de Aveiro, the marshy lagoon region of the Vouga River. These boats were originally used to harvest moliço, a type of algae used as agricultural fertilizer, but nowadays they are more commonly adapted for tourist purposes in Aveiro. This is a must-do activity!
Jardim do Rossio:
This is a lovely waterfront park near the canals and gondolas. While walking around the area, check out the art-nouveau houses in the Rossio area. The architectural style is certainly captivating.
Old Train Station:
This train station is one of the most beautiful in Portugal, save for the Sao Bento station in Porto. There is a new train station right next to this old one with modern architecture, while the old station serves as a gripping reminder of the old days. The azulejos on the facade are delightful and tell the story of Portuguese life.

Igreja Matriz de Santa Marinha de Cortegaça:
If you don’t mind a bit of a drive, this church is stunning. It’s North of Aveiro, closer to Porto, and a 36-minute drive from Aveiro. The church is covered in traditional Portuguese azulejos (blue tiles) with tall palm trees framing the entrance. It’s truly sublime!
Costa Nova:
This is a short 15-minute drive from Aveiro where you will find striped colorful houses and a charming beach. Costa Nova is a charming coastal village famous for its colorful striped houses that line the beachfront. These picturesque cottages, once fishermen’s homes, create a vibrant and unique atmosphere, making Costa Nova a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The area is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, perfect for relaxing or enjoying water sports, and its proximity to the stunning Ria de Aveiro. With its laid-back vibe, and scenic views, Costa Nova offers a delightful escape along Portugal’s Atlantic coast.
Praia da Barra:
Praia da Barra is a popular beach known for its wide sandy shoreline and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is famous for its striking lighthouse, Farol da Barra, one of the tallest in Portugal, which serves as a prominent landmark. With its clear waters and strong waves, Praia da Barra is a great spot for surfing, sunbathing, and beach sports. The surrounding area offers a mix of relaxed cafes and other restaurants, making it a perfect destination for a day by the sea.
Museu Histórico da Vista Alegre:
This ceramics factory crafted ceramics for over 200 years and now serves as a museum to show the artisanal ceramics well-known in this region.

Biking by the salt flats and Aveiro lagoon – rent BUGA bikes and explore the area and wildlife.
Passadiços de Aveiro:
Passadiços de Aveiro is a scenic wooden walkway that winds through the stunning wetlands and salt pans of the Aveiro region. This peaceful trail offers visitors the opportunity to explore the area’s unique ecosystem, home to diverse bird species and lush landscapes. The elevated boardwalk provides panoramic views of the Ria de Aveiro, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. The Passadiços de Aveiro offers a tranquil escape just outside the city, ideal for a leisurely stroll while immersing in the beauty of this coastal environment.
These are wooden walkways that follow the salt flats and lagoon. It makes for a perfect day of exploring the area. To do this impressive walk, start in Esgueira, walk to Vilarinho, and return for a total of 10 km. The walk is easy. flat and enjoyable.
Another awesome day trip worth mentioning
Agueda – cool murals and installations, this is a short 30-minute drive east of downtown Aveiro and absolutely worth the drive if you like street art and colorful art installations. It’s an Instagrammers dream come true! If you have a car, definitely check out AGUEDA. You will take away fantastically colorful and whimsical photos.

The best time to visit Coimbra and Aveiro is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October), when the weather is mild and pleasant. These seasons offer comfortable temperatures for exploring the cities’ historic sites, charming streets, and beautiful landscapes. Spring brings blooming flowers and a vibrant atmosphere, while fall offers fewer tourists and a more relaxed vibe. If you prefer warmer weather, summer (July and August) is also a good time, though it can be busier with tourists. Both cities are especially lovely in these seasons, offering a mix of cultural events, outdoor activities, and scenic beauty.
