My top suggestion would be to rent a car for the weekend. That way, you can explore the entire Sesimbra/Setubal area. Our favorite car rental aggregator is DISCOVER CARS. If you are unable to rent a car, there are several ways to travel from Lisbon to Sesimbra via public transportation.

Getting to Sesimbra from Lisbon is straightforward, with several options depending on your preferences:

By Car

• Driving Time: About 40–50 minutes.
• Take the A2 highway out of Lisbon, then follow signs to Sesimbra via the N378. It’s a scenic drive with views of the Arrábida mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Parking is available in the town center, though it can get busy during peak season.

Via Bus

• Duration: Around 1 hour.
• Rede Expressos and TST (Transportes Sul do Tejo) operate buses from Lisbon’s Praça de Espanha or Sete Rios stations directly to Sesimbra. Buses are frequent, affordable, and comfortable, making them a popular choice for travelers.

By Train + Bus

• Duration: About 1.5 hours.
• Take a train from Lisbon to Coina or Setúbal station, then connect to a local TST bus heading to Sesimbra. This option allows you to enjoy views of the surrounding region.

Via Taxi or Rideshare

• Duration: Approximately 40 minutes.
• Taxis or rideshare services like Uber or Bolt are convenient for door-to-door travel. Expect to pay around €40–€60, depending on traffic and time of day.

By Tour or Shuttle

• Many tour operators offer day trips to Sesimbra from Lisbon, often including stops at nearby attractions like the Arrábida National Park or Cabo Espichel.

What to do in Sesimbra

Sesimbra Castle (Castelo de Sesimbra) – Most of the castle is in ruins, but the remaining parts are interesting and the views of the ocean are spectacular.

Sesimbra beach aka Praia da Califórnia – walk along this wide, sandy beach and breathe in the fresh ocean air.

1. Leaves Cafe: My favorite place to eat in Sesimbra is Leaves Cafe. The owners are incredibly nice and serve absolutely delicious + creative vegan food.
2. Aloha Cafe – This veg place serves healthy + macrobiotic vegan and vegetarian food. Talk about eating the rainbow!

Arrábida forest and beaches are simply sublime! The beaches are unspoiled and the views of the forest in the background are enchanting. It makes you feel like you are in a different world where nature is king. This area can be reached in 45 minutes by car from Lisbon or about 15-20 minutes from Sesimbra. During the high season, you must take the public bus to the Arrábida beaches as they do not allow cars to travel through.

WHAT TO DO IN ARRABIDA FOREST/BEACHES:

Here you’ll find Portugal’s most beautiful beaches: Figueirinha, Galápos, Galapinhos and Creiro beaches (Portinho da Arrábida). There are many hiking trails in the Serra da Arrábida that you can check out using the All Trails app. The drive from Arrábida and the beaches to Setubal is incredibly scary and not for those afraid of heights! Thank goodness that Fernando isn’t afraid of heights because the hairpin turns and sheer drop-offs were frightening. If you want to avoid driving in this area, which is recommended during the summer, park your car and take a bus from Setubal. This dolphin-watching tour is SO much fun too!

You could also rent kayaks and go kayaking in the gorgeous azure waters.

Mercado do Livramento – this is the largest indoor market in Portugal and has a colorful array of fruits and veggies, plus Bloomy Market is attached and the best place to get a delicious vegan meal.

Avenida Luisa Todi – this is a great place to meander and feel the rhythm of the city-life.

Casa da Baia – this is an 18th century mansion converted into the tourism office. The architecture alone is worth the visit! I also cannot WAIT to do this dolphin estuary tour!! DOLPHIN TOUR

Praia do Troia – take the ferry to this glorious beach on the tip of the Tróia Peninsula and you will definitely feel like you are somewhere tropical. At Sado Estuary discover myriad species of birds and several dozen dolphins amid marshes, sandbanks, rice paddies and a vast area of woods and reed plantations.

• Best Weather: May through September is ideal for warm, sunny days perfect for enjoying the beaches like Praia do Ouro and Praia da Califórnia. Keep in mind that this is a very busy area during the summer months.
• Sea Temperature: The ocean is most swimmable between July and September.
• Festivals:
  • Other summer festivals often feature live music and cultural events.

2. Off-Peak & Hiking (March to May, October)

• Cooler Weather: Perfect for exploring the nearby Arrábida Natural Park and its stunning trails.
• Less Crowded: Spring and early autumn offer a quieter, more relaxing atmosphere.
