We have lived in the Lisbon area for 3 years now. I would recommend the following itinerary for one perfect day in Lisbon. A great place to start your morning is the Belém area. There you can visit the Belém Tower, Monument of Discoveries, Jerónimo Monastery, and walk along the Tagus River towards Lisbon City Center. By going to Belem in the early morning, you will likely avoid long lines at the most popular places and main attractions.
After exploring west Lisbon, I would take public transportation to the city center and have lunch at one of the delicious vegan restaurants mentioned below. After lunch, you could explore the Lisbon city center and then head east towards the Alfama District. In Alfama, you could check out São Jorge Castle, then head to the Santa Clara Market and Feira da Ladra. Don’t forget to check out the street art along the way.
Then you could go to the various viewpoints in Alfama and stay for sunset and a Fado show. My favorite vegan restaurant in Alfama is Al Sanpietrino Restaurant. It’s tiny so you must make a reservation, but it’s the perfect place to end your special day in Lisbon. This would be a jam-packed, yet extra lovely one-day itinerary for Lisbon. Logistics for One Perfect Day in Lisbon
The best way to get around Lisbon is via public transportation and walking. Make sure you bring your comfortable walking shoes with good grip! Here are some great trail runners for walking around Lisbon. You will be walking on cobblestones and up steep hills and narrow walkways. I highly recommend the Lisbon Card.
Is One Day Enough to Explore Lisbon?
While it’s possible to explore some of Lisbon’s highlights in a day, ideally, you’d want more time to truly experience the richness of the city. With just one perfect day in Lisbon, you could visit key landmarks such as Castelo de São Jorge, Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, and take a stroll through the historic Alfama district. However, you’d likely only scratch the surface of what Lisbon offers in terms of its culture, cuisine, and atmosphere.
Spending additional days would allow you to delve deeper into the city’s neighborhoods, indulge in local delicacies, discover hidden gems, and immerse yourself in the vibrant rhythm of Lisbon life. You could take a guided walking tour of Lisbon to see all of the hotspots and learn about the history to optimize your time. I would say that one day isn’t enough time to fully immerse yourself in Lisbon, but would recommend at least 3 days.

I highly recommend that you get a Lisbon Card for public transportation and discounts on many of the places mentioned in this blog post. Use my link to buy the Lisbon card ahead of time and then just pick it up at the metro station or tourist office. Another great way to save time is by taking a hop on/hop off bus tour that takes you to all of the highlights. The best way to get around Lisbon is via public transportation, but if you are very limited on time, it would be a good idea to take rideshare (Uber/Bolt). Also, the city is less crowded compared to the peak summer months. During these seasons, you can enjoy mild temperatures, blooming flowers, and sunny days perfect for exploring Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods, landmarks, and scenic viewpoints. Additionally, visiting during the shoulder seasons allows you to take advantage of lower accommodation rates and fewer crowds while still experiencing the city’s vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and lively atmosphere.
What NOT to Do if you only have one day in Lisbon
First, try to resist the temptation to spend too much time waiting in long lines at popular tourist attractions such as Belém Tower or Jerónimos Monastery. While these sites are undoubtedly iconic, spending hours in line can eat into your precious time and leave you feeling rushed. So, plan to arrive at these destinations as soon as they open in the morning or even beforehand. Additionally, I would highly recommend that you don’t go to Pastéis de Belém. They don’t offer vegan options and the lines are always long. You can get amazing vegan pastéis de nata at Green Beans, Vegan Nata, and even the grocery store, Auchan.
Second, avoid trying to see too much in one day. Lisbon is a city best explored at a leisurely pace, allowing you to soak in its vibrant atmosphere and discover its hidden gems. Instead of trying to cram in multiple sights, focus on a few key attractions or neighborhoods that align with your interests and preferences.

Third, don’t overlook the importance of taking breaks and enjoying the local culture. Last – avoid Tram 28 AT ALL COSTS! I know – it’s hard to avoid it as it’s an iconic tram and every blog talks about it. It’s honestly not worth it. It’s so crowded that you hardly see anything once you are inside. And you will lose a lot of time by waiting in line. Please trust my insider knowledge on this one. You will thank me later.
